MPAA Rating: PG for thematic elements, scary images, action and peril
Run Time: 101 Minutes
My Rating: 4.5/5
Hey everyone, I'm back!!!! Sorry I have been nonexistent all summer with an internship, 2 part-time jobs, school, friends, and family I haven't been able to sit down and write anhy reviews as well as even see any movies. Thankfully, I found some time yesterday to go and see one and hopefully I can start getting back into a routine so I can provide y'all with more reviews. With that said, lets just jump right into things. Yesterday I saw Laika Entertainment's Kubo and the Two Strings featuring the incredible voice talents of Charlize Theron (The Huntsman: Winter's War), Matthew McConaughey (Free State of Jones), Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter Series), and Art Parkinson (HBO's Game of Thrones). Kubo and the Two Strings comes from the same studio that brought us Coraline, Paranorman, and The Boxtrolls. It tells the incredible story of Kubo, a young boy, who must fight against the forces of evil after his mother is tragically taken away from him.
So I loved this film. It is probably one of my favorite movies of the year so far and besides Zootopia my favorite animated movie of the year. The animation is beautiful and the story is entrancing. I have always been a huge fan of Laika Entertainment and this is by far my favorite of the bunch. From the first minute, the story instantly engages you and keeps you enthralled until the very end. In fact, I wish the movie was longer so that I could remain in this world just a little bit longer. The story is based around an excellent mythology and filled with so many twists and turns that it keeps the audience guessing until the last few seconds. This is only enhanced by the fantastic voices provided by the actors. They each fit their characters perfectly providing for a more engaging experience.
The only downside I see to this film is that some of the elements in this film is not quite as kid-friendly as some parents may like. To me, this made the film even more amazing, but I must warn parents that there are some horror-type elements to this film and could scare younger children. I mean there is nothing too scary, but little kids could still be scared depending on what they have been exposed to. Once again, I did not see a problem with this, but there were parents in my screening whose kids were having a difficult time with it.
Overall, I thought this film was great and definitely a must-see. If you haven't been a fan of Laika Entertainment in the past, this film will definitely change your mind. I loved this film and I would recommend it to anyone!!
Thanks again for reading!! Once again sorry for not writing in a while. It's great to be back! If you have any questions, comments, or ideas just let me know!!

Midnight Special
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some violence and action
Run Time: 112 Minutes
My Rating: 4/5
So last night I saw Warner Brothers' Midnight Special starring Michael Shannon (Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice), Joel Edgerton (The Gift), Kirsten Dunst (FX's Fargo), Jaedenn Lieberher (St. Vincent), and Adam Driver (Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens). It tells the story of a father who takes his son, Alton, away from a cult after finding out that the US government is looking for Alton. However, what the US government doesn't know is the incredible powers that Alton possesses. Now, Alton and his family must evade US government and make it to designated place on a specific date so Alton can finally find out who he really is.
So, I actually really liked this film. To be honest, it was completely different than what I anticipated and at times it was completely out there, but it was a pretty interesting film that had incredible acting and a unique take on the science-fiction genre. The story is quite unique and I feel like this film would have done a lot better at the box-office if the marketers had done a better job at marketing the story. I had no idea how much science-fiction there would be going into the film, but I quite liked it and it kept me intrigued to the very end. However, I feel like had I known about all the science-fiction I would have made more of an effort to see Midnight Special when it first came to Texas. With the fantastic story, the actors truly bring it to life and make it interesting. They bring a sense of realism to the film that it would have deeply lacked. Midnight Special would fail if it weren't for the cast and they deserve a lot of credit for that.
The main issue with Midnight Special is that pacing of the film. The film goes along at a pretty slow pace and it makes for a long movie-going experience. The pacing is helped somewhat by the intrigue of the film, but even then it still feels like a longer movie than it actually is.
Overall, I thought the film was interesting and I am happy I saw it. This film is definitely not for everyone, especially if you are not into science-fiction. With that said, if you think that you handle it, I definitely think this is a good film to go and see. It will definitely make you think and hopefully be an enjoyable experience for you.

The Jungle Book
MPAA Rating: PG for some sequences of scary action and peril
Run Time: 105 Minutes
My Rating: 5/5
So Friday night I saw Walt Disney Pictures' The Jungle Book starring Bill Murray (St. Vincent), Sir Ben Kingsley (The Walk), Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), Idris Elba (Zootopia), Christopher Walken (Eddie the Eagle), Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years A Slave), and newcomer Neel Sethi. It tells the incredible adventure of a young mancub named Mowgli as he tries to save the jungle from the tiger Shere Khan. Along the way, he encounters a new friend and other threats, but also comes to understand who he really is and how he fits in his jungle-home.
So this is the next installment in Walt Disney Pictures' live-action remakes of their animated classics and in my opinion this one is the best so far. Honestly I can't believe that I am saying this because I loved Cinderella when it came out last year. With that said, this entry is incredible and absolutely stunning to watch. In case you weren't aware, the entire film was shot in LA using CGI. None of the jungle was actually shot in the jungle and it is amazing. I can't believe how far we have come in CGI and just seeing this incredible technology on the big screen is fantastic. The film is so stunning to look at that it just absorbs you right into the story. In fact at some moments in the film, you completely forget that you are even in the theater. If this film isn't at least nominated for the technical categories at next years Academy Awards, it will be a huge crime. Another great thing about the film is the incredible voice talent. All of the actors do an amazing job and are perfectly cast. With that said, the film truly relies on newcomer Neel Sethi to bring the film together and he is incredible. For someone so young, and working entirely with CGI, he does a spectacular job and keeps the film moving along.
Overall, this film is great and definitely one that everyone should see. This is Disney at its finest and I cannot wait for the next installment of live-action reboots (Pete's Dragon)!!! This film definitely deserves the praise that it is getting and in my opinion is one that deserves repeat viewing. Disney has made an fantastic film and one that I believe actually improves upon its animated counterpart.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
MPAA Rating: PG - 13 for intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality
Run Time: 151 Minutes
My Rating: 4.5/5
Hey everyone, I know I have been saying this a lot this year, but this semester of school has been kicking my butt and even though I have seen movies this semester, I just have not had the time to write my reviews. I hope to get back into the swing of things this weekend, so please forgive me. Also, if there are past movies that you want to see but I haven't posted a review of, feel free to email me or comment below and I will let you know exactly what I thought of the movie in question. With that said, lets get into my review of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Following the events of Man of Steel and his destruction of Metropolis, many people are questioning whether Superman is this hero they have been hoping for or a monster. No one questions this more than Bruce Wayne a.k.a Batman. Now 2 years later, with vengeance in mind, Bruce Wayne is ready to get rid of Superman once and for all. However, another businessman Lex Luthor has his own plan put into place to destroy both heroes. Now, with a greater evil among them, Batman and Superman must put aside their differences to save mankind from a new villain.
Overall, I thought the film was great in the sense that it does its job perfectly, but just good as a movie altogether. With that said, I am giving it the rating that I am because of the film does its job and does it well. The whole point of this film is to set up the DC Movie Universe. It is basically the prequel to the future Justice League movies. It introduces us to all the Justice League members in one way or another including a new Batman (Ben Affleck) and a glorified cameo by Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). It sets up future stories and a direction for the next couple of years which is a darker more serious superhero universe than we get from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Personally, I don't mind the darker tone, because I feel like it is a great contrast to the Marvel Universe and shows that even though DC is late to the game on their superheros, they are not just trying to imitate Marvel, but trying to do their own thing.
With that said, even though the film did a great job in terms of its purpose, the film as a whole was just good. One thing for me, is that this film is definitely a Batman movie with Superman being a supporting star. This is definitely Batman's journey as he tries to figure out his place in a world where aliens are now on Earth. As a major Superman fan this kind of bugged me. Also, I felt the film's major flaw was that it tried to incorporate so much into its story and it cuts back and forth so much that the overall story gets lost for a little bit, but then comes around towards the end of the film.
Overall, this film was quite enjoyable and one though has its flaws, does exactly what is was meant to do. Though it isn't the best film in the world, we have to remember that Marvel has given us some crap in the past (i.e. The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2). This film is a beautiful film to watch and one that sets up an exciting new universe for moviegoers to explore. In my opinion, you should definitely give this film a shot and if you don't like it then it will save you from 11 other planned movies over the next couple of years.

#OscarsSoWhite
Hey everyone, so once the nominations came out and the controversy over how "white" the Oscar nominations were, I promised myself that I would keep my mouth shut. However as the weeks have gone by and I have sat and read dozens of articles about how the Oscars are racist and talks of boycotting and rule changing, I just couldn't keep my mouth shut any longer. Now I know a lot of you that read this will disregard this post because I am a white "supposedly privileged" male and I don't know what I am talking about. With that said, I want you all to know that this post has nothing to do with race because I love all races and some of my very good friends are of color. This post is about common human decency and how we as Americans feel like we are entitled to everything and act like babies when we don't get what we want or what we think we deserve. Finally, keep in mind that I saw 194 films in 2015 including every one that is up for an award or that people thought would be an award contender along with many others that were never considered. I think I should know a little bit about what should and should not have been nominated. With that said, here we go....
Let's start with Will Smith and his amazing performance in Concussion. It was truly an amazing performance and that accent that he kept throughout the movie was impressive. With that said, this film is not a film that draws the Academy's eye. It's not because it has a black actor. In general movies about sports don't win very often. In fact, only 3 sports movies have ever won Best Picture at the Oscars. Now, looking at the best actor nominees for this year. First, Leonardo DiCaprio has never won an Oscar before, but he battled the elements and provided a powerful performance. The Academy loves it when actors risk it all for their roles and Leonardo DiCaprio did just that. Eddie Redmayne plays a man and his transition into a woman. Though not my favorite performance of the year, transgender issues are so prevalent right now that the Academy would never have passed up this opportunity to recognize these issues. Next, Michael Fassbender who plays the inventor Steve Jobs. He has been picked to be a nominee since the Academy Awards last year. This performance was on everyone's radars for over a year and this performance definitely lived up to the hype. Bryan Cranston plays a Hollywood screenwriter who wrote some of the best films in history. However, he never got any of the credit because he was part of the communist party and Hollywood rejected him. This performance was ripe for awards because Hollywood loves to reward movies that deal with its own history. Finally, Matt Damon, my favorite performance of the year, takes an entire film on his shoulders and makes it incredible. So, looking at what was nominated compared to Will Smith's performance it honestly doesn't surprise me. Also, the fact that Will Smith did not even want to play this role goes against him as well. I feel like if you didn't want to play the role, then you can't get all offended when you don't get nominated for something. Not every person gets nominated for something. That is just the way it goes. Trust me, there are many performances better than Will Smith's this year that did not get nominated. You want to talk about a problem, I have an issue that voice actors in animated films don't get nominated for the the big awards because Phyllis Smith gives one of the greatest performances ever as Sadness in Inside Out!!
The other controversy was Straight Outta Compton not being nominated. Now, I saw this film and after watching it, though I thought it was interesting and entertaining, never did it cross my mind that this was Oscar-worthy. It was an incredible story and had amazing acting, but the film is too controversial. NWA has always been a subject of controversy and the Academy doesn't like to be right in the middle of it. It has nothing to do with the fact that this film has an all-black cast. Also, there are so many other great films that were not nominated. Films that were even better than Straight Outta Compton. The matter that they weren't invited to the Oscars is complete bull. The Academy gives a certain amount of tickets to each studio and it is the studio's job to distribute the tickets how they wish. Seeing as how Straight Outta Compton was only nominated for its screenplay, it makes sense that the studio would reserve its tickets for its films that were nominated for more than one award. Everyone saying that it's the Academy's fault that they were not invited get your facts right. The Academy is not racist!!!
With all that said, the thing that annoys me is that these stars know how the Academy operates. They know what will and will not receive awards attention. It has nothing to do with race. If there was a race problem two years ago 12 Years A Slave would not have won. If there was a race problem Forest Whitaker would not have won. If there was a race problem Morgan Freeman would not have won or even been nominated. Finally, if there was a race problem Precious would not have received the recognition that it did. As mentioned above, the Academy is not racist. In fact, if anything the Academy has tried its best to be an advocate for diversity from the very beginning.
The problem is not that the Academy is racist because its not, the problem lies in the fact that we live in a world where everyone feels that they are entitled to praise and awards. We live in a "Participation Award" world. The truth of the matter is that there are going to be winners and there are going to be losers. It has nothing to do with race, gender, sexuality, or anything else, it depends on what is good and and what is bad. Now, I am not saying that the Academy doesn't look over great movies, because it does, but its not because of diversity reasons like everyone believes. If The Danish Girl hadn't of been nominated, the LGBT community would be reacting the same way. We live in a world where we are so nervous about offending others (because people get offended so easily) that no matter what we do people will get offended. We wonder why our kids grow up feeling like they are so privileged. And yet we give out "Participation" Awards" like they're candy. I'm sorry, but that should not be the case. We are teaching our kids horrible lessons because in reality, life is not fair. In fact, it sucks sometimes and things don't always go the way we planned them to be. So instead of getting all offended and feeling like you are entitled to something step up and do something better. Will Smith and everyone else not nominated should use the fire that they are using to boycott the Oscars (which is ridiculous by the way), and make something incredible that will be nominated in the coming years. Don't cry racism or sexism every time you don't get something that you want because honestly this is not what those that came before us fought for. Martin Luther King Jr. didn't fight racism so that people could play that card when they didn't get what they wanted. He fought against racism so that his people wouldn't continue being treated like second-class citizens. He fought it so everyone could sit down in the same restaurant together, so that people could use the same restrooms, and so that people wouldn't walk outside every day and fear for their lives. Not so that people can claim racism when they don't get nominated for an award!!! We need to change this "Participation Award" mentality and start learning to love life for its ups and downs and not just feel like we are entitled to everything!!
Well there is my rant. I hope this is enlightening and hopefully furthers the conversation away from how the Academy is racist and more to how our society feels entitled to everything!!! If you have any questions or comments I would love to hear them!! Thanks for reading!!

Risen
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for Biblical violence including some disturbing images
Run Time: 107 Minutes
My Rating: 3.5/5
So Saturday my daughter and I saw Affirm Films' Risen starring Joseph Fiennes (FX's American Horror Story) and Tom Felton (The Harry Potter Franchise). Telling from the point of view of a Roman soldier, Risen tells the story of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the manhunt that occurred after Christ's body went missing from his tomb.
So I really liked this film. Before I saw it, I was really excited to see it because I felt like it was a new take on the Christ story. With that said, it definitely was unique and very interesting. I think that is one of the film's greatest assets and selling points. Though the story of Risen is fiction, there is no reason why it couldn't of been true. Everything that happens in the movie has the possibility to have happened. I love this aspect of it because it is a story that has never been done before and it shows the Resurrection in a completely different life and gives it a whole new meaning. Besides the incredible story, the actors do an amazing as well. Joseph Fiennes is spectacular and completely makes the film. In all reality, this film could have been a complete disaster, but Joseph Fiennes' performance holds the film together and makes it worthwhile.
Though the story and actors make the film great, there are two major flaws that the film faces. One is that the pacing of the film makes it seem very long. The film movies at a very slow pace and I thought that I had been in the theater forever. It's second flaw is that it wasn't as uplifting as I thought it was going to be. The parts that I thought they would expound on were rushed which I felt deterred from the story's message.
Overall, I thought the film was good and one that the Christian community would enjoy. It is a very unique story and the acting is incredible. If you are looking for good Christian entertainment, this is definitely the film for you!!
